One Dead In Motorcycle Crash With Truck And Trailer

A Las Vegas man was killed when his motorcycle collided with a truck pulling a trailer, according to police reports. The 31-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene by investigating officers, who said that the accident on West Craig Road and Revere Street appeared to have been caused when the driver of the truck made a lane change and clipped the motorcycle. While no charges have been filed, police anticipate that the 35-year-old truck driver will face multiple counts in connection with the accident. It is unclear from initial reports if police believe that drugs or alcohol was involved in any way in the crash.

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY-IMPORTANT FOR ALL

The last few years have seen an exponential increase in the number of accidents involving motorcycles and the deaths and injuries that result from these crashes. As more people take to the roads on motorcycles for enjoyment or to save fuel, the number of motorcycle crashes continues to increase and the average age of a motorcycle crash victim continues to go up, since many of the new riders are older than in the past. Young drivers still make up the largest group of motorcycle accident victims, as do those who do not have a license and have not taken motorcycle safety classes.

According to statistics released by the Centers for Disease Control, there were about 34,000 motorcycle-related deaths and another 1.2 million injuries between 2001 and 2008. Of these, the highest death rate was for 20- to 24-year-olds followed closely by 25- to 29-year-olds. Younger male riders still make up the largest group of motorcycle accident victims, although the average age of a motorcycle accident victim continues to increase yearly. In all, motorcycle deaths between 2001 and 2008 increased by 55 percent, while injuries increased by 46 percent. This high level of increase is attributed partially to more motorcycles on the road but also to an attitude of carelessness among passenger vehicle operators.
